Milligrams vs micrograms: one prefix, a 1,000× difference
Milli means 10⁻³ and micro means 10⁻⁶. For grams, that makes 1 milligram equal to 1,000 micrograms.

Anchor the prefixes to powers of ten
NIST defines milli as one-thousandth and micro as one-millionth of the base unit. Because the exponents differ by three, the units differ by a factor of 1,000.
The preferred micro symbol is µ, while many interfaces use the ASCII abbreviation mcg for readability. Both refer to micrograms in this guide.
Formula: 1 mg = 1,000 mcg; 1 mcg = 0.001 mg
Check: Lowercase m means milli. Uppercase M is a different SI prefix, so capitalization matters.
Normalize before dividing
A calculation should not divide an mg value by an mcg value until one has been converted. A convenient method is to normalize both the vial amount and target amount to micrograms before finding the ratio.
For example, 2.5 mg becomes 2,500 mcg. The quantity has not changed—only the unit used to describe it.
Formula: mg × 1,000 = mcg; mcg ÷ 1,000 = mg
Check: Write the unit beside every intermediate value so a factor-of-1,000 error is easier to spot.
Use dimensional checks
When the same mass unit appears in the numerator and denominator, it cancels cleanly. The remaining output should match the volume or marked-unit scale being calculated.
Compound IQ preserves the underlying quantity when the mg/mcg selector changes, so toggling 10 mg displays the equivalent 10,000 mcg.
Formula: target mcg ÷ mcg per unit = marked units
Check: If a result changes 1,000-fold after a unit toggle, stop and recheck the conversion path.
